The Mallorcan School

A generation of writers who grouped under this name. They wrote in the magazine Mitjorn (1906). Noucentisme was a literary movement of cultural renewal whose objective was to modernize Catalan culture and bring it to the level of Europe.

Themes and Ideology

They dealt with the description of ideology and landscape. Noucentists wrote poems trying to design a modern, cosmopolitan ideal city and the impossibility of Europeanization. Against this, the renovation was in the description of the landscape, aided by any sign of progress or cosmopolitanism.

Authors

Representatives of the coast included Miquel Costa i Llobera and Joan Alcover. The group gathered around generations of 1906, including Maria Antònia Salvà and Maria Antònia Salvà Ferrer and Ignasi Isern i Ribas. In 1917, Joan Pons i Guarch led Miquel Fortza.

Miquel Costa i Llobera

Born in Pollença in 1854 and died in Palma in 1922. He was born into a landowning family, studied at the Balearic Institute for his baccalaureate in Palma in 1872, and began his law studies in Barcelona, where he came into contact with the fathers of the literary revival: Marià Aguiló and Jacint Verdaguer. In 1902, he participated in the Floral Games of Andalusia, and two years later, he chaired the Floral Games in Mallorca.
