Core Objectives for Community Social Workers
Community social workers must prioritize the following goals when operating in this field:
- Develop a map of territorial imbalances within the city to focus intervention efforts.
- Map the economic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and relational characteristics of the specific target group (e.g., unemployed youth or the homeless) or the district undergoing urban regeneration.
- Analyze public and institutional discourse regarding the collective or district to understand the prevailing social imagination and how the target group is perceived.
- Establish necessary resources by distinguishing between assets provided by community organizations and those that must be requested from institutions through collective action.
- Map institutional policies, key actors, and resources to identify potential partners for funding and collaboration, as well as areas of resistance.
- Develop a map of opportunities for social, economic, and educational advancement to foster population cohesion.
1.1.1. Orientations for Community Social Work in Urban Areas
We note the following general guidelines for social workers in this field:
- Analyze the ethnic, religious, cultural, and age demographics of the neighborhood. Modern cities are highly heterogeneous; in many districts, a significant portion of the population—particularly within specific age brackets—is not native to the region. For example, the child population in some city centers is now predominantly of immigrant origin.
- Incorporate experts in migration flows into the team who possess proficiency in the languages most commonly used in the environment to facilitate effective meetings and communication.
