Evolution of the Cold War (1947-1991)

Major Sources of Conflict

The Cold War, spanning from 1947 to 1991, marked a period of intense rivalry between the former WWII allies. This era witnessed significant shifts in international relations, shaping distinct phases of the conflict.

Stages of the Cold War

  • Initial Phase (1948-1953): Characterized by maximum tension and rivalry between the two blocs.
  • Intermediate Phase (1953-1975): Known as the era of "peaceful coexistence."
  • Final Phase (1975-1991): Concluded with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the emergence of a new world order.

The Warsaw Pact lagged behind NATO in terms of military strength and technology. Many Warsaw Pact weapons were outdated and difficult to use, while NATO possessed superior weaponry and advanced technology.

Key Conflicts (1948-1953)

  • Berlin Blockade (1948-1949): The Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin to prevent its reunification. The US and UK responded with an airlift, supplying West Berliners with essential goods. This led to the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
  • Emergence of Non-Aligned Countries: Decolonized nations formed a third bloc, aiming to remain independent of the superpowers' influence.
  • Suez Crisis (1956): Egypt's nationalization of the Suez Canal prompted intervention from France, the UK, and Israel. The Soviet Union threatened nuclear action, leading to US pressure for withdrawal and the deployment of UN forces.
  • Hungarian Revolution (1956): Hungary declared neutrality and withdrew from the Warsaw Pact. The Soviet Union invaded, crushing the uprising and installing a pro-Soviet government.
  • Second Berlin Crisis (1961): East Germany constructed the Berlin Wall to halt the mass exodus of citizens to West Berlin. The wall became a symbol of communist oppression and the division of the world. It was demolished in 1989.
