The Chrysalids: Key Moments and Character Analysis

Moment 1: The Discovery of Sophie

David was walking on his farm when he suddenly encountered a girl. She had slid down a mountain of sand, and her foot became caught on some rocks. David helped pull her foot free and was shocked to see that she had six fingers. He took her home, and her parents promised not to tell anybody.

Moment 2: The Dream of the Knife

David was injured by a piece of wood and began to bleed. He remarked that he needed three hands to bandage the wound, which incited his father's anger and led to punishment. That night, he lay in bed with many questions in his head: "I didn't do anything wrong. Why did Father punish me? He doesn’t want a third hand, but is it so bad to say it, or even to think about it? What if I had a third hand, or a sixth toe like Sophie?" Finally, he fell asleep and had a terrible dream. He saw his father holding a long knife, preparing to kill a mutant calf. When David looked closer, he received a terrible shock: it wasn't a calf, but Sophie!

Moment 3: Petra's Secret Powers

When his little sister Petra was six years old, the group made a frightening discovery. There were nine in the group, not eight, and the newest member could not keep her secret. Petra was an intelligent, funny little girl whom David loved very much, but until the day of the accident, he did not suspect she possessed telepathic powers. He was working in the cornfield when he received an urgent thought-shape calling for help. It was so strong that it was physically felt. David said, "I must go and rescue somebody immediately." He ran as fast as he could across the fields and over the footbridge to a deep pool in the stream, where he found Petra in the water and jumped in to rescue her.

Moment 4: The Mutant Attack

One day, Petra disobeyed her mother's instructions and went alone into the forest. She was riding her pony along a small country road when she suddenly saw a strange, ugly animal ahead. Petra jumped off her pony and climbed up a tree. She watched in horror as the creature attacked her pony. A thought-shape of Petra's fear and sadness reached everybody in the group. They all jumped on their horses and rode quickly to the forest. David arrived first; Petra's pony was lying on the ground, dead, and a horrible mutant creature was standing beside it. Before David could take out his gun to shoot, two arrows hit the creature, and it fell to the ground. The arrows came from Rosalind and Michael. Moments later, Katherine, Mark, Rachel, and Sally also arrived, and David climbed up the tree to carry Petra to the ground.
