Alfred

  • Alfred believes he is a hero saving thousands of lives, writing letters to Hannelore about his supposed bravery. In reality, he is a deck swabber struggling with acne who spends his time hiding in a supply closet to avoid his duties.
  • "Imagine, my darling," he writes to his sweet Hannelore, "your Alfred is saving 2,000 lives." He is then interrupted by a superior: "Have you cleaned the decks yet, Frick?"

Joana

  • Joana's narration is the first in the novel. She is shown fleeing the encroaching invasion of her homeland, Lithuania, while grappling with the guilt of leaving others behind. It later emerges that she accidentally implicated family members who were subsequently deported and faced near-certain death.
  • Despite this immense burden, she is the most capable and resourceful character, largely due to her medical training and perseverance. Her skills are in high demand, which significantly increases her chances of survival.

Emilia

  • Emilia is an idealistic but damaged Polish girl who wears a pink knit cap. When the group is first thrown together, they struggle to survive and initially do not trust one another, even withholding their names and referring to her simply as "the Polish girl."
  • She believes that Florian is a knight from Polish legends.
  • She is 15 years old and eight months pregnant, facing a premature birth.
  • Sent away from Lwów by her father, a math teacher, she stayed on a farm where she became pregnant. She eventually fled and trekked toward Germany.
  • As a Polish citizen, she lacks identification papers and must pretend to be German to survive.

Florian

  • Florian is a German civilian sent on a secret mission. While little is known about his objective, he is desperate to board the ship to deliver it. He takes Emilia under his protection, reminded of his own little sister.

Winter

In the novel, winter symbolizes a period where everyone faces greater danger than ever before.

The harsh Central European winter brings constant cold, snow, and dangerous ice, posing a lethal threat to the most vulnerable. With the added chaos of war, many have been driven from their homes and forced to flee.

The Abandoned Barn

This is where most of the characters meet for the first time and begin to form their group. The conflict in personalities and mutual distrust is palpable in this confined space, yet it is also where those walls of distrust are broken down, compelling them to form an alliance to survive.
