Argumentative Structures and Techniques
In argumentation, facts, reasons, and evidence are presented to reach a conclusion. There are several primary structures:
- Induction: Presenting facts to lead to a conclusion.
- Deduction: Presenting an idea or defense; counterarguments can also be incorporated.
- Weighting: Presenting both advantages and disadvantages.
Characteristics of Argumentative Texts
Argumentative texts are characterized by a predominance of negative or affirmative declarative sentences and the frequent use of connectors:
- Cause: as, because, due to...
- Consequence: therefore, so...
- Opposition: but, nevertheless...
These texts also utilize examples, comparisons, and citations (snippets of text used as supporting ideas).
Grammar and Expression
The combination of accents distinguishes words based on their grammatical support. Interjections are exclamatory words expressing feelings like joy (e.g., Hooray!). Onomatopoeia attempts to replicate everyday sounds and noises (e.g., Clink).
Presentation of Arguments
To effectively convince someone, arguments must be presented in a clear and orderly manner.
Literary Renewal of the Twenties and Thirties
Following Noucentisme and the Avant-garde, the 1920s and 1930s marked a period of significant literary change.
Renewal and Diversification of the Novel
The Catalan novel regained strength starting in 1925. The psychological novel became the predominant trend. Key novelists include:
- Miquel Llor
- Joan Sebastià Arbó
- Carles Soldevila (author of Fanny)
These were followed by authors who consolidated their work after the Civil War, such as Salvador Espriu, Llorenç Villalonga, and Mercè Rodoreda.
Theatre and Poetry
Theatre: After a crisis during Noucentisme, new forms emerged, including high bourgeois comedy (adaptations by Carles Soldevila) and ideological critiques (Josep Maria Millàs-Raurell and Joan Oliver). Josep Maria de Sagarra was the creator of the dramatic poem (e.g., Coffee of the Navy).
Symbolism: Based on post-symbolist poetry originating in late 19th-century France. Famous figures include Joan Vinyoli and Carles Riba.
Non-Fiction Prose and Journalism
The 1920s and 1930s also saw the consolidation of journalism and the essay in Catalan, building upon Modernisme, Noucentisme, and the Avant-garde. Notable figures include Carles Riba, Nicolau d'Olwer, and Josep Pla.
