Carbon Chemistry and Organic Matter

Carbon chemistry is based on the study of the element carbon, which is a key chemical in the constitution of organic matter and all life forms. Fundamentally, carbon has the property of forming long chains. It is also essential for the formation of CO2, which is needed for photosynthesis to produce oxygen for plants. This process involves two main stages: 1. Assimilation and 2. Dissimilation.

The Petrochemical Industry and Hydrocarbons

The petrochemical industry is grounded in the study of hydrocarbons, which are derivatives of petroleum. Beyond petroleum fuels, this sector is responsible for the production of fibers, plastics, detergents, fuel, and asphalt.

Environmental Science, Biotope, and Biocenosis

The study of the environment involves nature and the living beings that inhabit it. The specific conditions where they live, such as light and humidity, are known as the biotope, while the community of living beings is called the biocenosis. Plants perform photosynthesis together to sustain the population. This ecosystem includes a food chain consisting of herbivores, carnivores, and the process of organic rotting or decomposition.

Atomic Structure and Nuclear Energy

An atom is the most fundamental particle of matter. It is established by a core or nucleus formed by protons (positively charged particles) and neutrons (particles with no charge). Negatively charged electrons orbit the nucleus, bound to the core by electrical forces. The protons and neutrons are held together in the nucleus by nuclear energy.

Environmental Pollution and Global Warming

Pollution affects the Earth, water, and air. The CO2 produced by the combustion of fossil fuels is meant to be converted into oxygen through the photosynthesis of plants. However, when this balance is disrupted, it prevents rays from leaving the atmosphere, causing the Earth to overheat. This global warming is harmful to wildlife and leads to the melting of the polar ice caps.

The Ozone Layer and UV Protection

The ozone layer is a zone in the atmosphere located at an altitude of approximately 20km. It is composed of an isotope of oxygen (O3). Its primary function is to block ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun from reaching the surface, thereby protecting flora and fauna and preventing conditions such as skin cancer.
