Cancer Treatment Modalities

  • Dietary Anti-Cancer Substances: Foods believed to help eliminate cancer cells or reduce risk (e.g., fresh fruits, vegetables, and olive oil).
  • Chemotherapy: A mixture of antimitotic drugs supplied intravenously. Antimitotics inhibit mitosis (cell division) to stop cancer cell proliferation.

  • Transplants: Used primarily in cases of leukemia, involving bone marrow transplantation.
  • Monoclonal Antibodies: Manufactured antibodies designed to target specific carcinogenic cells, helping the immune system eliminate them.
  • Surgery: Used to physically remove tumors in various types of cancer.

Leukemia: Blood Cell Cancer

Leukemia is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled production of immature leukocytes (white blood cells) in the blood.

Forms of Leukemia

  • Acute Leukemia: Evolves rapidly and requires immediate, intensive treatment.
  • Chronic Leukemia: Evolves slowly, often with periods of remission and multiplication.

Cloning and Genetic Replication Techniques

Cloning is the process of creating structures that are genetically identical to the original. This technique can be applied to genes, tissues, organs, or an entire organism.

Historical Milestone: Dolly the Sheep

In 1997, the first cloning of a whole mammal, Dolly the sheep, was achieved using the technique of nuclear transfer. Although Dolly was born small, her DNA was biologically "old," resulting in a high risk for diseases compared to naturally conceived animals.
