The story centers on the Ashbys, an English country-squire family residing at their centuries-old estate, Latchetts, in the fictional village of Clare near the south coast of England. The narrative is set in the 1940s, in the aftermath of World War II.

Family Dynamics and Financial Struggles

The Ashby family consists of Beatrice Ashby ("Aunt Bee"), a spinster in her fifties, and the four children of her late brother, Bill: Simon (20), Eleanor (18–19), and twins Jane and Ruth (9). Following the deaths of Bill and his wife, Nora, eight years prior, the family has faced financial hardship. Bee has maintained the estate by transforming the family stable into a profitable business, focusing on breeding, selling, and training horses, alongside providing riding lessons.

The Missing Heir

Upon turning twenty-one, Simon is set to inherit both Latchetts and a substantial trust fund left by his mother. Simon had a twin brother, Patrick, who was older by a few minutes. Shortly after the deaths of Bill and Nora, Patrick disappeared, leaving behind what was presumed to be a suicide note.

The Arrival of Brat Farrar

The title character, Brat Farrar, is a young man who recently returned to England from America. A foundling, he fled an office job at age 13 to work on ranches and stables in the western United States. He became an expert horseman until a fall left him with a permanent limp.

The Impersonation Scheme

While in London, Brat is mistaken for "Simon" by Alec Loding, a second-rate actor familiar with the Ashby family. Seeing an opportunity for profit, Alec proposes that Brat impersonate the missing twin, Patrick, to claim the trust and the estate. Alec coaches Brat on the family's history and the village of Clare. Though initially reluctant, Brat agrees to the scheme, driven by his passion for horses.

Uncovering the Truth

After two weeks of intensive tutoring, Brat approaches the family solicitor, Mr. Sandal, claiming he adopted the name "Brat Farrar" after running away. He presents his own history as the account of Patrick's missing years. Both Mr. Sandal and Bee are convinced by his story. Following a verification process, the family welcomes "Patrick" to Latchetts. His arrival eventually leads to the revelation of Patrick's true fate: he was murdered by Simon. The final confrontation results in Simon's death and Brat's hospitalization, where Bee's Uncle Charles identifies Brat as the illegitimate son of Bee's wastrel cousin, Walter.
