The Western Bloc

The Western Bloc was characterized by the following:

  • Political Systems: Primarily democratic, with the notable exceptions of Spain and Portugal.

  • Economy: Operated under capitalist economic systems.

The Eastern Bloc

The Eastern Bloc was characterized by the following:

  • Composition: Comprised the USSR and communist states across Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
  • COMECON: In 1949, the USSR established the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance to facilitate economic development.
  • Political Systems: Communist regimes modeled after the USSR.
  • Warsaw Pact: Members of the Warsaw Pact, a military alliance established by the USSR in 1955.
  • Economy: Operated under communist economic systems.
  • China's Position: The People's Republic of China, led by Mao Zedong, did not form part of this bloc due to its complex relationship with the USSR.
