BIOS Boot Process Steps

The steps undertaken by the BIOS during the boot process are:

  1. Hardware Check (POST): The BIOS checks all hardware components. If a bug is found, a warning message is displayed on the screen or a beeping alarm sounds. This check is called the Power-On Self-Test (POST).
  2. Video BIOS Initialization: If the POST process completes without difficulty, the boot process continues. At this point, the video adapter's BIOS starts.
  3. Manufacturer Information: After this, information regarding the BIOS manufacturer and version is displayed.
  4. System Tests: The BIOS initiates a series of system tests. The messages now emerging are shown on the screen.
  5. Device Detection: Next, the BIOS checks the present devices and their characteristics, which are mostly IDE devices.
  6. Plug and Play Configuration: If the BIOS supports Plug and Play (PnP) technology, all devices are configured. It assigns each device an IRQ, an I/O port, and a DMA channel.
  7. Summary Screen: At the end of the sequence, the BIOS screen presents a summary of the system data.

AMI BIOS Main Menu Options

The options displayed in the AMI BIOS main menu are:

  1. Standard CMOS Setup: This menu sets the system date and time, as well as the hard drives and floppy disks connected to your computer. You can also view the amount of installed memory.
  2. BIOS Features Setup: This option configures the boot sequence, the Num Lock state, and security access to the hard disk and floppy disks (such as requiring a username and password), and enables or disables the POST.
  3. Chipset Features Setup: This configures parameters affecting the RAM, microprocessor, AGP bus, PCI, ISA, and other integrated devices like serial or parallel ports.
  4. Power Management Setup: In this menu, you can configure various power-saving options.
  5. PNP-PCI Configuration: This determines whether expansion cards are configured by the BIOS or the operating system (OS).
  6. Load BIOS Defaults: From here, default values are loaded from the CMOS.
  7. Integrated Peripherals: This allows you to configure all ports and devices that are part of the motherboard.
  8. Hardware Monitor Setup: This option configures parameters that affect system monitoring.
  9. Supervisor Password: Allows you to set a supervisor password and a user password. The supervisor has full access, while the user has limited access.
  10. HDD IDE Autodetection: Allows the system to automatically detect connected IDE hard disks.
  11. Save and Exit Setup: This saves the changes that have been made and exits the BIOS.
  12. Exit Without Saving: Exits the BIOS without saving any changes.
