Changes in the Map of Europe
Victorious countries established new frontiers for defeated states. The main beneficiary was the Soviet Union, which gained territory at the expense of Germany, Finland, Poland, and Japan. Other countries also experienced border changes.
Creation of the United Nations
Another consequence of World War II was the creation of the United Nations, following the failure of the League of Nations.
Impact on Civilians and Soldiers
The war resulted in a great loss of life, along with many wounded and maimed individuals, creating a significant economic burden. Those who survived faced hardships and poverty. Both soldiers and civilians were traumatized by the brutalities they witnessed and endured.
The Cold War (1947-1991)
The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the USSR and the USA, along with their respective allies, following World War II. It was an undeclared confrontation based on mutual threats and attempts to expand spheres of influence. The Western bloc, led by the USA, defended capitalism and formed the NATO alliance in 1949. The Eastern bloc, led by the USSR, defended communism and formed the Warsaw Pact in 1955.
Characteristics of the Cold War
- Increased espionage
- The space race
- Arms race
- Several low-intensity conflicts
Major Conflicts During the Cold War
Berlin Blockade (1948)
England, the USA, and France introduced the Deutschemark in West Germany, including the Soviet-controlled sector of Berlin. In response, the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin, preventing the delivery of supplies. The Allies responded with an airlift to provide essential goods. After eleven months, the USSR lifted the blockade. This event led to the creation of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
Korean War (1950-1953)
North Korea, under the influence of the USSR, attacked South Korea. The war ended with the borders remaining largely unchanged.
Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)
The US imposed a naval blockade on Cuba to prevent the arrival of Soviet missiles. After negotiations, the Soviet Union removed the missiles from Cuba, and the US removed its missiles from Turkey.
