Inversion and Conditionals
1. Should + subject + infinitive
Should you need any help, contact me immediately.
2. Were + subject + to + infinitive
Were he to resign, the company would collapse.
3. Had + subject + past participle
Had we studied harder, we would have passed.
Negative forms: Should he not… Were she not…
4. Inversion with Negative Adverbs
Never, rarely, seldom, little, scarcely, barely, not only, nowhere, in no way, on no account, not until, no sooner.
Structure: Never + auxiliary + subject + rest.
Only after + clause + auxiliary + subject + verb (Only after the exam did I relax.)
So + adjective + be + subject + that... (So difficult was the exam that nobody finished early.)
Such + be + noun + that...
Participle Clauses
- Present participle: Verb + ing, main clause.
- Perfect participle: Having + past participle, main clause.
Relative Clauses
Defining:
- "The girl who lives next door is my cousin."
- "The phone that I bought yesterday is already broken."
Non-defining:
- "My cousin, who lives next door, is a doctor."
- "Barcelona, which is one of the most visited cities in Europe, attracts millions of tourists."
Formal relative clauses:
- "The man with whom I work is very intelligent."
- "The girl to whom I was talking is my cousin."
