The narrative voice is paramount, possibly influencing the communicative effectiveness of the novel. Delibes' voice provides the narrative with the same unique characteristics as if it were another character. The story is told from an outside perspective (3rd person) but remains closely aligned with the world represented by the narrator. The narrator is positioned with sympathy towards the characters.

The Transformative Power of Global Travel

English2.61 KB

I was going to talk about tennis, but many of my teammates have already covered that topic, and I believe you likely know even more about it than I do. Instead, I want to discuss one of my favorite things to do: traveling.

A Lifelong Passion

I have been fortunate that, since I was young, my parents have taken me to many different places—from Asia to America—and they still do today. From a very young age, I realized that traveling teaches you many things that you might otherwise ignore, such as:

  • Different cultures and traditions
  • Unique stories and histories
  • Diverse cuisines
  • New perspectives

You meet new people and often make friends who teach you even more about the world.

Non-Personal Verb Forms

The personal forms of the verb are the infinitive, gerund, and participle. In addition to conjugation, every verb has three invariant forms: the infinitive, gerund, and participle. These forms do not function as a verb nucleus on their own.

Infinitive

The infinitive matches the characteristics of nouns and performs the same functions: subject, direct object, noun modifier (with a preposition), and indirect object. The infinitive may also take a direct object itself. Example: I need to rest.

Gerund

The gerund plays the role of a circumstantial complement and functions as an adverb. In some cases, it may act as an attribute. Examples: resting, laughing.

Participle

Formed with the endings -ado/-ido (e.g., cantado), the participle...

Narrative Manipulation in Otto Preminger's Laura

English2.69 KB

Laura (Otto Preminger, 1944) is a classic mystery film and a clear example of how the temporal structure of the plot can affect the construction of the characters. The main purpose of this essay is to analyze the use of flashbacks in Laura as a way to manipulate the viewer's opinion of Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), making us think that he is innocent when he is not.

Flashbacks are often used to recount past events, but in this case, they are used to manipulate the viewers' minds and make them think differently. The syuzhet (the plot's systematic arrangement of the story) also plays an important role in this film to achieve this purpose. From the very beginning of the story, Waldo is introduced as one of the...
