Mastering the Five Stages of Academic Composition

English2.9 KB

Defining Composition

Composition can be defined in several ways:

  • A piece of writing undertaken as an academic exercise in grammatically acceptable writing; an essay.
  • The parts of which something is composed or made up; its constitution.
  • A work of music, art, or literature.

The Five Stages of the Writing Process

The writing process explains what we do and helps us understand why we do it that way. It consists of five distinct stages:

  • Invention
  • Organization
  • Drafting
  • Revision
  • Editing

Stage 1: Invention

Invention often makes the difference between an adequate piece and a good or great one. The author needs to know what they are going to write about and have something to say. Key considerations include:

Aldous Huxley's Dystopian Vision: Critiquing Utopia and Society

English2.71 KB

Aldous Huxley's Anti-Utopian Stance

Aldous Huxley's anti-utopian remarks in the late 1920s stemmed from a profound aversion to the utopian speculations he encountered by 1930. Many of these, influenced by H. G. Wells and ultimately by Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis (1627), were distinctly scientific in nature. Huxley observed that those who envisioned a utopian future ‘invoke not the god from the machine, but the machine itself. [...] Thus although in one sense Huxley’s novels and non-fiction prose prior to 1932 seemed to indicate that he would never stoop to utopian themes, in another they made Brave New World inevitable.

The Genesis of Brave New World

One of the chief reasons why Huxley wrote Brave New World was to discredit, if not discourage,...

Personal Reflections and Future Aspirations

English2.46 KB

My Vision of the Future

I believe my life in the future will be very different from now. I plan to live in Ciudad Real in a large house with my wife and two children. I hope to have twin boys, David and Sergio. I will likely work only in the mornings at an office, though I am not yet sure what my role will be. My wife will also work in an office or at a hospital. During holidays, we will visit my family in the village or travel to the beach. I know it is just a dream, but anything is possible.

Ten Years From Now

Ten years from now, I think I will be living in my own flat in a city. Living in a flat is more convenient than a house; it is much easier to keep clean and tidy. I will probably work as a journalist because I love reading, writing, and...

Verb Structure and Grammatical Functions

English3.93 KB

Definition and Function of Verbs

The verb is the kind of word that expresses an action, a process, and a state.

Morphological and Syntactic Characteristics

Morphologically, verbs are distinguished because they can be decomposed into a root and a series of endings called morphemes. The root provides the basic meaning of the verb, while the ending provides the grammatical meanings of time (present, past, future) and mood (indicative, subjunctive, imperative).

Syntactically, the verb serves as the core of the Verb Phrase (VP) predicate.

Grammatical Accidents of the Verb

Conjugation and Thematic Vowels

Verbs are classified into three different conjugations based on their thematic vowels:

  • 1st Conjugation: Ends in the vowel a (e.g., love).
  • 2nd Conjugation:

Essential Best Practices for Spokespersons

What the Spokesperson Must Do

  • Know company policies: Understand how information is released. You are not the boss; respect the established chain of command.
  • Understand permanence: Once information is released, it cannot be retracted.
  • Stay on topic: Never answer questions outside the scope of the issue.
  • Always tell the truth: It is better to say, "I cannot comment on that," than to lie.
