World War II: A Global Military Conflict (1939–1945)
The Second World War was a major military conflict spanning from 1939 to 1945. It involved all European countries, Japan, the United States, China, and various European colonies across North Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
Causes of the War
- Nationalist Discontent: Following the end of World War I, Germany and Italy were dissatisfied. The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to cede territory to Poland and Czechoslovakia, which contained large German populations. Italy, despite being on the winning side, did not receive the Mediterranean territories it desired, fueling a desire to recover lost lands.
- Economic Protectionism: The Great Depression of the 1930s led European governments to adopt protectionist measures to reduce imports. As countries struggled to find new markets, tensions rose. Germany, Italy, and Japan implemented economic policies focused on autarky and rearmament.
- Expansionist Policies: Germany, Italy, and Japan sought to expand their territories to acquire raw materials and satisfy territorial ambitions.
- Appeasement Policies: Great Britain initially supported a policy of appeasement toward Germany and Italy, tolerating territorial expansion in an attempt to maintain peace.
Formation of Opposing Sides
The expansionist policies of authoritarian and totalitarian powers divided the world into two opposing sides:
The Axis Powers
In 1936, Germany and Italy signed a pact. Germany also signed a pact with Japan to defend against the communist USSR. Italy joined this alliance in 1937, forming the Berlin-Rome-Tokyo Axis in 1940. Germany also signed a non-aggression pact with the USSR, agreeing not to fight each other and to divide Poland.
The Allies
Realizing the impossibility of stopping German and Italian expansion through appeasement, Great Britain abandoned the policy and signed a mutual support pact with France. After Germany attempted to annex Danzig, Great Britain, France, and Poland signed a defense agreement to assist one another in the event of a German attack.
The Outbreak of War
War broke out in Europe on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. In support of Poland, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany. Meanwhile, acting in accordance with the non-aggression pact, the USSR occupied eastern territories of Poland and Finland. In 1941, the United States joined the war following the attack on Japan, and the USSR joined the Allies after being invaded by Germany, which broke their non-aggression pact.
