Working Conditions as Determinants of Work Climate
The work climate is the human and physical environment in which daily work is developed. It influences employee satisfaction and, consequently, productivity. Some aspects that determine the work climate in an organization are:
Autonomy
Autonomy refers to the independence of individuals in the execution of their normal duties. A positive work climate encourages employees to have all the independence they are capable of assuming.
Physical Conditions
Physical conditions encompass the environmental characteristics in which work takes place: lighting, sound, space distribution, location (situation) of people, utensils, etc.
Leadership
Leadership is defined by leaders' ability to relate to their colleagues. Leadership that is flexible to the many work situations that arise, and offers treatment tailored to each employee, creates a positive work environment. This environment should be consistent with the mission of the company and encourage success.
Relationships
Relationships include qualitative and quantitative aspects in the field of interpersonal connections. "Sociograms" can be designed with the results obtained, reflecting:
- The number of relationships established.
- The number of close connections.
- Who are not related but work together.
- The cohesion between the different subgroups, and so on.
Involvement
Involvement is the degree of commitment of employees to their company. It is crucial to recognize that effective leadership and acceptable working conditions are essential for employee involvement.
Organization
Organization refers to whether there are established methods of operation and whether the organization of work production processes is working efficiently or reactively.
Recognition
It is important to determine if the company has a system of recognition for a job well done. While it's easy to recognize the prestige of those who usually hold it, it's more challenging to provide distinction to those who are not usually noted. When a job well done is never acknowledged, apathy arises, and the working environment gradually deteriorates.
Pay
The reward system is essential. Low average wages and a fixed basis do not contribute to a good working environment; they do not allow for an assessment of improvements or results.
Equality
Equality is a value that measures whether all members of the company are treated with fair criteria. This helps determine if there is any discrimination.
Other Factors
Other factors that influence the work environment include training, promotion expectations, job security, working hours, medical services, etc.
