In a desperate attempt to destroy the incriminating documents, Sir Percival accidentally sets fire to the vestry and perishes in the blaze. Walter, now married to Laura (Mrs. Hartright), works to ensure her public acknowledgment as the rightful heiress of Limmeridge. Count Fosco, the remaining threat, is also eventually killed.
