Understanding English Conditionals

First Conditional

The first conditional indicates that a situation will occur with certainty in the future.

[if + Present Simple] + [Future Simple (will)]

If he finishes his homework, he’ll go to the cinema.

Second Conditional

The second conditional indicates that an action could occur. It has a nuance of doubt.

[if + Past Simple] + [Conditional Simple (would)]

If I met Leonardo DiCaprio, I’d ask him for his autograph.

Third Conditional

The third conditional indicates the impossibility of an action taking place in the past.

[if + Past Perfect Simple] + [Conditional Perfect (would have + past participle)]

If she had got up earlier, she wouldn’t have missed the train.

The Dangers of Fast Food

Hello, my name is Andrés, and I'm going to talk about the dangers of fast food. Firstly, I'd like to start with some healthy habits that should be considered more than this type of meal:

  • Eating fruits and vegetables
  • Drinking lots of water
  • Exercising regularly

Eighty percent of the population thinks that fast food, or junk food, is better because they can buy it anywhere, at any minute, and eat it without having to wait much longer. Healthy meals are way more expensive, and preparing them takes a lot of time. Businessmen or women, college students, and even families choose to eat in places like McDonald's, Burger King, or other fast-food chains rather than spend some money and time on real food. It's not an exaggeration: it's a reality in a large number of cities.

I think people should think more about their health. Hamburgers, fries, sodas, or even pizza contain lots of calories that are bad for the heart, the colon, and the digestive system. Obesity is one of the biggest dangers of overeating these tasty but nasty products. For example, the famous soda Coca-Cola has more than seventy-five percent sugar; that's why it's not recommended for diabetic people.

Maybe many of you think I'm wrong, but that is fine. I know that, in the end, not only you but the whole world will understand me and many others who believe in a good future, with good eating habits and a good life. Think about it, will you? Being healthy is a nice offer for a better world. Thank you, and I hope you enjoyed this.
