The Valar: Elite of the "Angelic" Beings

Melkor / Morgoth

The First Dark Lord and the first of the Ainur to be created by Eru. He created discord in the music of the Ainur. Spiritual brother of Manwë, he was the most powerful of the Valar, possessing all aspects of Eru’s thoughts. He was taken back to Valinor in the chain Angainor, and after the poisoning of the Two Trees, he fled Valinor.

Tulkas (Astaldo)

Husband of Nessa. Known as “The Brave One,” he is the strongest of all the Valar, using only his fists as weapons. He laughs in sports and war, even in the face of Melkor. He was the last of the Valar to descend into Arda.

Estë (Rest)

The Gentle, known as “Healer of hurts and weariness.” Wife of Irmo.

Aulë

Husband of Yavanna. He created the seven fathers of the Dwarves, known as Mahal (The Maker). He also created the two lamps after Yavanna’s request.

Sauron

An evil being who hoards everything.

Lórien (Irmo)

Master of Visions and Dreams. Lórien and Mandos are the Fëanturi (Masters of Spirits). Husband to Estë.

Aloren

Gives inspiration.

Ulmo

Lord of the waters and one of the chief architects of Arda, second only to Manwë.

Varda (Elentári)

Queen of the stars, the Kindler, and spouse of Manwë. She kindled the first stars before the Ainur descended into the world. Melkor hates and fears her because she rejected him.

Vána

Described as “Most perfectly beautiful in form and feature,” she is the Queen of Blossoming Flowers and is eternally young. Sister of Yavanna and wife of Oromë. She often visits the forest of Oromë.

Yavanna (Kementári)

Queen of Earth and Giver of Fruits, spouse of Aulë. She created the two trees and is responsible for the Kelvar (animals) and Olvar (plants). She asked for the creation of Ents after the creation of Dwarves.

Nienna

Lady of Mercy and tutor of Olórin. She gives strength to those in the Hall of Mandos, and her tears are of healing and pity.

Nessa

The Dancer, wife of Tulkas. Noted for her agility and speed, she can outrun deer.

Uromë

God of the hunt, inventor of horses. His horse is Nahar, and he uses a hunting horn.

Ulumori

Ulmo's horn, which leaves longing and melancholy.

Taniquetil

The highest mountain in Arda.

Morgoth

The great enemy, Melkor's new name.

Mandos (Námo)

The Judge of the Dead and Master of Doom. Husband of Vairë the Weaver. He is stern, dispassionate, and never forgets. He spoke the Prophecy of the North and is considered a most important god.

Vairë

Mandos' spouse, the Weaver and goddess of memory.

Balrog

A demon of fire.

Melizan

Known for most beautiful singing.
