What Would You Change in Your City If You Were Mayor?

Many people think that city life is ideal for young people; however, most young people would agree that our city lacks adequate facilities and activities for our age group. It seems that many neighbourhoods are designed either for small children, with playgrounds on almost every corner, or for people who can afford to pay for entertainment. In my opinion, more should be done to provide opportunities and entertainment for teenagers and school-leavers.

Revitalizing the City Centre for Young Residents

To begin with, the city centre isn't a very pleasant place for young people to spend time. There aren't enough affordable places to hang out with friends; consequently, most young people don't bother going there.

Proposed Solutions for Social Spaces:

  • Create more pedestrian areas and social spaces.
  • Provide free, high-speed internet access to encourage young people to spend time socializing in the city without having to spend money.
Tackling Traffic Congestion and Transit Costs

A further problem is the excessive traffic in the city centre. Furthermore, public transport into the city is often expensive.

Proposed Solutions for Mobility:

  1. Ban cars from the main streets to reduce congestion.
  2. Set up a free, environmentally friendly public transport system, including buses, trams, electric bikes, and dedicated cycle lanes, to reduce traffic and make access easier.
Establishing a Youth Consultation Committee

Finally, I would create a committee of young people to propose ideas about how to improve facilities for our age group. Moreover, the committee would be asked to consult with youth groups and clubs to evaluate their specific needs. Ideas generated in this way could be submitted to the public to allow them to send feedback and vote on which proposals they would like to become reality.

Conclusion: Making the City Attractive for Youth

In conclusion, our city is currently failing to provide adequate facilities and opportunities for young people. To address this, the measures outlined above could be introduced to make our city more attractive and livable for young residents.
