New Discoveries Shaping Our Understanding of the Cosmos

New discoveries.

The Immensity of the Universe

The Sun is a star in the Milky Way. Our galaxy is only one among the billions that make up the universe.

The Discovery of Deep Time

It was once believed that Earth was only about 6,000 years old.

Biological Evolution

It was once believed that each species had been created as we know it. Darwin's Origin of Species showed that species change over time.

New structure for the solar system.

Defining a Planet

A planet is a body orbiting a star, with a large mass and a spherical shape, that has cleared the area around its orbit. Its mass should be enough for its shape to be almost spherical, and it must have cleared its orbit.

That should explain a theory about the origin of the solar system. The Sun and all the planets rotate in the same direction. The orbits of all planets are eclipses. The orbits of all planets are at about the same plane.

Inner Planets vs. Outer Planets

Inner Planets: Small, dense. Outer Planets: Big and light. All rocky celestial bodies have impact craters.

Theory of Planetesimals. It is the most widely accepted theory about the origin of the solar system.

The origin of the Moon:

Moon Origin Theories

  • Sister Theory: The Moon and Earth formed together in the same area of the solar system, so their densities should be similar, but they are not.
  • Adopted Theory: The Moon and Earth formed simultaneously, but the Moon formed further from the Sun, explaining its density. However, this doesn't explain the age difference.
  • Daughter Theory: A planet collided with Earth, and the materials originated from the crust and mantle (but not the core) participated in creating the Moon. This is the most widely accepted theory today.

Types of Universes

  • Closed Universe: A universe with a density over a certain amount (critical density). Gravity slows the spread and reverses the process from one point to collapse, giving rise to time zero.
  • Open Universe: A universe with a density less than the critical density is open and undergoes indefinite, accelerating expansion.
  • Flat Universe: A universe with critical density, constantly expanding.

Panspermia

  • The first organisms, or their precursor compounds, originated outside Earth and traveled here on an asteroid or comet.
  • Meteorite evidence
  • Trace fossil microorganisms
