Classification of Resources

a) Natural Resources

These are resources derived from nature without human intervention. They include:

  • Biotic Resources: Resources obtained from living organisms.
    • Examples: Forests, animals, fish, crops.
  • Abiotic Resources: Resources derived from non-living entities.
    • Examples: Minerals, soil, water, air.

b) Human-Made Resources

These are resources created or modified by human beings using natural resources.

  • Examples: Buildings, machinery, vehicles, roads.

Classification Based on Renewability

a) Renewable Resources

  • Can be replenished naturally over a short period.
  • Examples: Solar energy, wind energy, water, forests, and crops.
  • Features:
    • Regenerate naturally.
    • Sustainable if managed properly.
    • Often environment-friendly.

b) Non-Renewable Resources

  • Exist in limited quantities and cannot be replenished once exhausted.
  • Examples: Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), minerals (gold, silver, iron).
  • Features:
    • Finite availability.
    • Their overuse leads to depletion.
    • Contribute to environmental issues like pollution and climate change.

Classification Based on Utility

a) Material Resources

  • Physical substances used in the production of goods.
  • Examples: Wood, iron, cotton, oil.

b) Non-Material Resources

  • Intangible benefits or services.
  • Examples: Solar energy, wind power, internet, knowledge.

Classification Based on Development

a) Actual Resources

  • Resources currently being used and whose quantity is known.
  • Examples: Coal in Jharkhand, petroleum in Gujarat.

b) Potential Resources

  • Resources available in a region but not yet utilized due to lack of technology or economic feasibility.
  • Examples: Solar energy in the Thar Desert, wind energy in coastal areas.

Classification Based on Distribution

a) Ubiquitous Resources

  • Resources found everywhere.
  • Examples: Air, sunlight, water.

b) Localized Resources

  • Resources found in specific regions.
  • Examples: Gold in Kolar, petroleum in the Middle East.

Classification Based on Ownership

a) Individual Resources

  • Resources owned privately by individuals or households.
  • Examples: Land, houses, vehicles.

b) Community Resources

  • Resources accessible to a community.
  • Examples: Public parks, grazing grounds, ponds.

c) National Resources

  • Resources owned by a nation and controlled by the government.
  • Examples: Forests, rivers, railways.

d) International Resources

  • Resources regulated by international bodies for the benefit of all countries.
  • Examples: High seas, Antarctica.

Classification Based on Function

a) Consumable Resources

  • Resources directly used for consumption.
  • Examples: Food, water, fuel.

b) Productive Resources

  • Resources used for production.
  • Examples: Machines, tools, labor.
