Simple Microscope
A simple microscope, commonly used by watch repairers, allows for the observation of minute details by magnifying an object placed within its focal length. The convex lens of the microscope produces an erect image on the same side of the lens as the object. By adjusting the distance between the object and the lens, the image can be obtained at the distance of distinct vision, enabling clear observation without straining the eyes.
Dispersion of Light
The phenomenon of splitting light into its component colors is known as dispersion of light. The band of colored components of a light beam is called a spectrum. The different colors of light in the spectrum of white light are violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.
Ozone Depletion
When the ozone layer is depleted, ultraviolet (UV) radiations from the sun can reach the Earth's surface in greater proportion. This results in damage to animal and plant life, as well as causing skin cancer and cataracts in humans. The ozone hole is a region of ozone depletion observed in the stratosphere above Antarctica.
Water Pollution
Water pollution has two main sources: natural and manmade. Natural sources include minerals washed off land due to heavy rains, dead animals, animal waste, ash from forest fires, and sulfur compounds released after earthquakes. Manmade sources include city sewage and industrial waste. These pollutants can be categorized as domestic sewage, industrial waste, radioactive waste, agricultural runoff, oil spills, and thermal pollution.
Noise Pollution
Noise pollution has various impacts on the human body:
- Auditory effects: Auditory fatigue and deafness
- Non-auditory effects: Communication interference, sleep interference, concentration interference, annoyance, irritability, violent behavior, and mental disorientation
- Physiological effects: Nausea, fatigue, anxiety, visual disturbance, insomnia, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease
