Common Mental Disorders
Mental health problems are as varied and complex as the human brain itself. Among the most common disorders are anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Anxiety
Anxiety is an unpleasant emotional state that is often accompanied by physiological and behavioral changes similar to those caused by fear. Symptoms of anxiety are varied, including: nervousness, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Although usually diagnosed in childhood, it affects not only children, as in many cases it continues into adolescence and later stages of life.
Depression
Depression is a disorder that affects the whole body and mood, interfering with the daily activities of the individual. Depression is not a fleeting sadness that can be changed at will. If untreated, symptoms can last for years. However, proper treatment can help most people who have it.
Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a very serious brain disorder that affects a person's ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions, or relate to others. Most people with schizophrenia have symptoms of the disease throughout their lives. It can be controlled but not cured.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD is a condition characterized by the presence of obsessions, compulsions, or both. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or rituals performed in response to an obsession, such as doing things in a certain order or repeating actions continuously.
Healthy Habits for a Strong Nervous System
For the nervous system to perform its functions properly, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including:
- Maintain a balanced diet to provide the proper nutrients.
- Maintain an orderly life with regular hours that allow for adequate rest and leisure activities.
- Engage in regular exercise, rest briefly during the day, and sleep at least eight hours overnight.
- Regularly perform intellectual and mental activities.
- Avoid situations and activities that can harm the nervous system in any of its parts.
- Take protective measures to prevent injuries from accidents. For example, wear a helmet when driving a motorcycle or bicycle, and use a safety belt when riding in a car.
- Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs that negatively affect nervous system function. These substances can cause serious mental illness and even death.
