The Story of King David and Nathan
The story begins with King David sending his men to devastate the region of the Ammonites and besiege Rabbah. One day, while he stayed in Jerusalem, he met a beautiful woman named Bathsheba and sent to inquire after her. David ordered her brought to him, and they lay together, resulting in her pregnancy. Since Bathsheba's husband, Uriah, was away, David decided to place him on the front lines of the battle. Uriah was wounded and died, along with several other officers.
Five Human Needs
The five human needs are:
- Physiological: These needs pertain to the basic requirements of our condition as living beings.
- Safety: This is the need to feel safe from dangers and threats in a potentially hostile world.
- Acceptance and Affection: This is the need to be loved, to receive affection, and to belong to something or someone.
- Self-Esteem: This is the need for prestige and a sense of worth, feeling like you can achieve success in life.
- Self-Actualization: This is the need to become the person we aspire to be.
Stages of Life and Human Needs
These needs correspond to different stages of life:
- Childhood: Needs 1 and 2 (the center of life is the self)
- Teens: Needs 3 and 4 (dependent on the group)
- Adulthood: Need 5
However, all these needs remain active throughout life. The real engine of life is at level 5, self-actualization.
What is Personal Maturity?
Personal maturity involves not dwelling solely on the needs of the first level (or living in fear of the others) but progressing towards a project of self-actualization.
The Connection Between Moses and Mary
The roles of Moses in the history of Israel and Mary in the Gospel are related. Both are examples of self-actualized individuals. They feel the need for self-actualization that manifests within them, leading them to new tasks and new states of personal life, even beyond their own perceived potential. This is called vocation.
Defining Value
Value is a quality possessed by things or situations that are important to the meaning of our lives and our personal maturity. It is something that challenges and calls to us. We are attracted to beauty and repelled by the unpleasant; we hate violence and cruelty and are drawn to affection and kindness.
Underpinning a Life Project
A life plan is based on the principles from which a person approaches life and makes decisions. The fundamental question is what one wants in life to live meaningfully. Every project requires hard work.
The Fundamental Option
The fundamental option is a basic decision that springs from the core of a person's personality and determines the primary intention of all other acts. It refers to the entirety of one's existence, embracing the whole person and giving direction and meaning to their life.
Consciousness and the Vatican II
Consciousness is equivalent to "realizing" or "being aware." It is the knowledge we have of ourselves, our actions, and the world around us. It is the most intimate and profound part of a person, the core of human existence from which our best impulses and desires emerge in search of personal fulfillment and happiness. The Vatican II calls it the "Sanctuary of Man."
The Responsible Person
A responsible person is someone with the ability to answer for their own actions. They assume the task of building their own life consciously, embracing truly humanizing values.
