What are Gears?

Gears are mechanical elements designed to transmit turning movements.

Characteristics of Gears

Two main characteristics define a gear:

  1. Number of Teeth (Z): This characteristic represents the number of teeth on a gear.
  2. Rotational Speed (N): This characteristic represents how fast a gear rotates.

Gear Ratios and Speed Control

Different Number of Teeth

Using gears with different numbers of teeth allows us to modify a machine's rotational speed. If the output gear is larger than the motor gear, it will rotate slower. Conversely, if the output gear is smaller, it will rotate faster.

Same Number of Teeth

If two gears have the same number of teeth, they will rotate at the same speed.

Motor Gear vs. Output Gear

In a gear pair:

  • The motor gear initiates the movement and drives the output gear.
  • The output gear receives the movement from the motor gear.

Types of Gears

Gears come in various shapes, including:

  • Cylindrical Gears: These gears have teeth that are parallel to the axis of rotation.
  • Conical Gears: These gears have teeth that are tapered, allowing for the transmission of motion between intersecting shafts.

Straight Teeth vs. Helical Teeth

  • Straight Teeth: Gears with straight teeth have teeth that follow straight lines.
  • Helical Teeth: Gears with helical teeth have curved teeth, which offer smoother and quieter operation compared to straight teeth.

Gear Trains and Idler Gears

Idler Gear: To achieve the same rotational direction in both the motor and output shafts, an intermediate gear called an idler gear can be introduced. The idler gear's primary function is to reverse the turning direction.

Gear Train: A mechanism consisting of more than two gears is referred to as a gear train.

Gear Mechanisms

Reducing Gear Mechanism

In a reducing gear mechanism, the motor gear is smaller than the output gear. As a result, the output gear rotates slower but generates more force (torque).

Speed Multiplier Mechanism

have? the motor gear is bigger than the output gear, the output gear rotate faster but carry out less force

12. What is a compound gear? What is it used for?
are two gears of different sizes that are joined, moving, therefore, at the same speed. is used to reduce the speed
13. What does it mean when the gears transmit the movement accurately? what advantage and disadvantage can this feature have? it means that they cannot slide as pulleys. the transmit the movement accurately but the gear teeth can break and they need lubricant
14. What functions does the lubricant in gear mechanism have? to reduce friction, to reduce the noise generated when the gears turn, to reduce the wear of the teeth.
