The Evolving Family Model

Writers such as Octavio Estela Fernández Grassi and Mouján suggest that we are experiencing a profound transformation of the family model. This transformation may appear to be a sign of exhaustion, but there are many ways of being a family. This evolution can be considered a crisis, in the sense of concern or a terminal stage. The family is in an accelerated process of change, but it remains in good health when viewed from a contextual and evaluative framework different from that of our ancestors.

The Changing Role of Women

Some of these changes are related to the current modification of the role of women. Women can now enter the labor market, leading to higher expectations of personal satisfaction beyond marriage and family.

Historical Context of Family Structures

In the past, single-parent families often resulted from the death of a parent. Now, most single-parent families are the result of divorce, although some are formed by single women with children. Since the 1960s, there have been several changes in the family unit. A growing number of couples live together before, or without, getting married.

Defining Family

There are many definitions of family, but most agree that it is the basic social structure where parents and children are related.

Balancing Friendship and Authority in Parenting

How can we unite to be a friend and a parent to our children simultaneously? It is valid to be a father or a mother who is close, shares activities, plays sports, discusses ideas, comments on the news, and shares views and values. However, it is also necessary for parents to express their personal values, set limits, and take positions. That is, it is essential to set limits, openly expressing values, but in a posture of dialogue, discussion, and conversation.

Types of Family Structures

  • Nuclear or Elementary Family: This is the basic family unit consisting of a husband (father), wife (mother), and children.
  • Extended Family: This consists of more than one nuclear unit, extends beyond two generations, and is based on the blood ties of a large number of people.
  • Single-Parent Families: This is a family that consists of one parent and their children. This can have several origins.
  • Single-Mother Family: A family in which the mother alone takes on the responsibility of raising her children from the start.

Different Ways of Being a Family

  • Rigid Family: Difficulty in accepting the changes in children. Parents treat children as adults.
  • Overprotective Family: Excessive concern to overprotect children. Parents do not allow the development and autonomy of their children.
  • Child-Centered Family: This type of parent seeks the company of their children and depends on them for their satisfaction.
  • Permissive Family: In this family, parents are unable to discipline their children.
  • Unstable Family: In this family, it is not enough to be attached. Parents are confused about the world they want to show their children due to a lack of common goals.
  • Stable Family: Parents have a clear understanding of their roles and know the world they want to give and show their children, full of goals and dreams.

The Role of Motherhood

The role of motherhood is the basic function of physically and psychologically nurturing children, providing protection while encouraging them to grow.
