Understanding Factorial Designs

A factorial design studies two or more independent variables at the same time. Every combination of variable levels is tested, allowing researchers to examine each variable’s main effect and how the variables interact. In a classic 2x2 design, each variable has two levels, creating four conditions.

Why Conduct a Factorial Study?

Researchers use factorial designs for two primary reasons:

  • Main Effects: To determine if each independent variable has its own individual effect on the dependent variable.
  • Interactions: To see whether the effect of one independent variable depends on the level of another.

The Math Behind Interactions

A difference in differences is the math behind an interaction. It compares the size of one difference between two conditions to the size of another difference. When these differences are not equal, an interaction is present, meaning the effect of one variable changes depending on the level of the other. The phrase "it depends" is a common signal that an interaction exists.

Factorial Notation

Factorial notation indicates how many independent variables are in a design and how many levels each has. For example, a 2x2 design has two variables with two levels each, resulting in four cells. A 3x2x5 design involves three variables with levels of three, two, and five, creating thirty cells and several potential interactions.

Identifying Factorial Language

Key terms in journal articles that indicate a factorial design include interaction, main effect, simple effects, moderated by, depends on, and combined effect. Popular press articles often use phrases like "it depends," "especially for," "only when," or "stronger for some people than others" to signal an interaction.

Analyzing Null Effects

A study can show null effects for three main reasons:

  1. The independent variable truly does not affect the dependent variable.
  2. The study failed to create enough difference between groups due to weak manipulation, insensitive measures, or ceiling/floor effects.
  3. There was too much within-group variability caused by individual differences, measurement error, or situation noise.

A p-value represents the probability of obtaining results as extreme as those observed if the null hypothesis is true. To improve results, researchers should use manipulation checks, precise measures, and larger samples to reduce noise.

Threats to Internal Validity

There are several threats to internal validity that researchers must mitigate:

  • Maturation: Behavior changes due to time rather than the independent variable.
  • History: External factors affecting the treatment group.
  • Regression: Extreme scores naturally moving toward the mean.
  • Attrition: Participants dropping out of the study.
  • Testing: Participants becoming accustomed to the test.
  • Instrumentation: Changes in measuring instruments or observers over time.
  • Observer Bias & Demand Characteristics: Expectations influencing results.
  • Placebo Effect: Improvement due to belief in treatment.

Researchers can avoid these threats by using comparison groups, double-blind studies, and counterbalancing.

Interpreting Results

Main Effects

  • Table: Calculate marginal means. If the marginal means differ, there is a main effect.
  • Graph: Compare the average height of each line. Different average heights indicate a main effect.

Interactions

  • Table: Use the "difference in differences" method. If the differences between row means are not equal, an interaction is present.
  • Graph: Lines that are not parallel indicate an interaction.
