Territorial Balance and Development

Areas of Development and Territorial Balance

To balance regional logistics centers and their geographical position, Spain has always been a land of passage between Europe, the Iberian Peninsula, and North Africa, facilitating trade and transit of goods and people, both through the corridor of the Ebro and the Mediterranean corridor, as well as by sea.

This fact, and its strong industrial activity, encourage that Catalonia is a first-class logistics center in the European context.

Logistics platforms are fundamental logistics infrastructure, designed to support logistics and freight, and are therefore necessary to ensure supply to production and consumption. They are connected with one or more high-capacity roads to try to save costs and time in transport.

The physical implementation of a logistics platform on the land has a significant impact on many aspects:

  • Contributing to socioeconomic development
  • Acting as an instrument of planning
  • Allowing better management of flows
  • Helping to improve local communications
  • Helping to concentrate various land companies, which avoids physical dispersion and favors increased synergies

Diversity and Regional Imbalances

Throughout this unit, we have seen how the various economic activities are located unevenly in a territory. They are concentrated in crucial places, seeking, in some cases, proximity to raw materials, markets, or consumers.

Regional contrasts are manifested both in the unequal distribution of the population and the uneven location of economic activities and services. Roads are strategic and essential elements that guarantee the movement of flows of all kinds from one place to another, allowing a country to rise as a complex hierarchical work efficiently and in a balanced way.

Today, when we talk about territorial balance, we are not alluding to a hypothetical homogeneous distribution of all resources in the territory but to an organization and functioning of the territory that allows residents of a certain territory to enjoy a standard of living comparable to the inhabitants of another territory despite inequalities.
