Teenagers, Problems, and Seeking Reliable Advice

It is normal for teenagers to have doubts and questions about the problems or conflicts that arise in our lives. Often, out of shame or pessimism, we hesitate to consult an adult for solutions to these issues.

The Internet: A Double-Edged Sword for Information

One of the great advantages of the Internet is the vast amount of information available to anyone with an online device. The Internet offers a wide variety of information from different sources, allowing you to find many answers to your problems from diverse opinions and points of view.

The challenge with this abundance of data is that we often don't know if the information being posted is true or false. We are in an era where fake news is very common across different pages and sources on the Internet. However, fake news does not always have a malicious purpose; sometimes, these posts are just jokes or mockeries intended to make the reader laugh.

Consulting Trustworthy Sources

I would strongly recommend to all teenagers who have problems and do not know how to solve them, to talk and consult their doubts with reliable people who have greater experience than their own. While the Internet is useful, personal advice from a trusted adult remains invaluable.

Mobile Phones: Protection, Dependency, and Control

The mobile phone has become an indispensable tool for human beings in the 21st century. Now, adolescents, often starting around 13 or 14 years old, are beginning to depend heavily on these technologies. If they have any problem, they are just seconds away from consulting their parents or anyone else. This raises a critical question: Is the mobile phone primarily a good protection tool for teenagers, or is it simply an excuse to justify its constant use?

The Immediacy of Mobile Technology

It is true that with a mobile phone, more than 50% of your problems can be solved instantly. The great (or perhaps not so great) invention that the mobile phone has created is immediacy. As mentioned before, if you have any problem, you are just a few minutes away from solving it.

Benefits of Mobile Phones for Teens and Parents

  • Instant problem solving and access to information.
  • Parents feel more confident if their child is out at a party or away for a couple of days.
  • Emergency communication is readily available.

The Risk of Over-Protection

However, taking the previous topic into account, the excessive control exercised by parents over their children can easily lead to over-protection. It is common to see adolescents who constantly receive messages from their parents asking or examining their activities without allowing their children sufficient freedom.

Finding the Balance

That is why each factor—protection and freedom—can be good or bad; it all depends on the use they want to give it. Parents have to find a balance or a middle ground between the freedom and the protection they exercise towards their children. But children are also obliged to make good use of their mobile phone without giving their parents any suspicion that they are using it for inappropriate purposes.
