Shattered Mirror: A Catalan Family Saga
Mirall Trencat (Shattered Mirror) is a play that tells the story of a family across three generations, from the point of view of Sofia, Maria, and Teresa, set in Barcelona.
Teresa Godoy's Ascent
Teresa Godoy is related to the main character. She was single and pregnant when she married Jesus Masdeu. After Jesus' death, Teresa's father arranges her marriage to Nicolau, an older, wealthy man. This marriage elevates her social status.
The Valldaura Legacy
Salvador Valldaura marries Teresa, further increasing her social standing. Salvador purchases a tower where they all live. They have a daughter, Sofia, with Eladi. Sofia marries and continues to live in the tower. Sofia and Eladi have two children, Maria and Ramon.
Betrayal and Tragedy
Eladi has an affair and fathers a daughter named Maria, who goes to live with Sofia, who knows the truth. Maria and Ramon develop feelings for each other, but during a conversation, they realize they are siblings. Ramon decides to leave, and Maria commits suicide by jumping from a tree, a symbolic act.
Death and Decline
The family experiences further tragedy with the deaths of Salvador's two sons. Ramon's infidelity and Maria's suicide contribute to the family's decline. Teresa dies later. Eladi dies of a heart attack.
Civil War and Resilience
Teresa dies a month later as the Civil War approaches. Sofia goes to Paris, where Hermine helps her. Jesus, Teresa's revolutionary son, provides her with a home. Armando appears, and the shattered pieces of the mirror begin to reflect the family's past. After the war, Sofia returns and marries Jesus for his money.
The End of an Era
Sofia sells the land to build apartments, marking the end of an era. The final chapter shows rats scurrying through the house before it is destroyed, symbolizing the family's decline.
