Service Sectors in Spain
Financial Services
The Spanish financial sector has significant international prestige and is highly competitive, being one of the sectors that invests the most in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) with major innovations. National banking produces most of the sector's business, and the largest companies, Banco Santander and BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria), are two of the main banks in the Eurozone. Santander is even among the top 10 worldwide, conducting most of its business in Latin America. In Spain, the four stock exchanges of Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Valencia operate.
Information and Communication Services
Information and communication services have developed very rapidly in recent years. Telefónica is a global leader in telecommunications, present in other European countries, Latin America, and Africa.
Business Services
Business services are the fastest-growing services. More than half of business services are located in Madrid and Catalonia.
Social Services
Public social services are the most important. The Spanish state allocates around 20% of its GDP to social protection benefits, in addition to what NGOs and some religious organizations provide.
State and Regional Administration Services
The number of civil servants and public entities has increased due to the development of the State of Autonomies and the progressive transfer of powers to the communities. These services are concentrated in Madrid, the seat of the central government, and in cities that host the headquarters of regional governments.
