Hester Prynne, an adulteress who is about to be released from prison. Hester is being led to the gallows, where she must be publicly ashamed for having committed adultery. Hester is required to wear the letter A on her dress at all times. She has sewn a large scarlet A, giving the letter an air of elegance. Hester takes Pearl, his daughter, with her. On the scaffolding she is asked to reveal the name of Pearl's father, but she refuses. In the crowd, Hester recognizes her Amsterdam husband, Roger Chillingworth. Despite all the shame, Hester protects Pearl's father from punishment by refusing to renounce his name. The parade of adultery (the worst parade of all time) spreads through the city when the lost husband of Hester Prynne arrives in disguise! Once she is back in prison, she appears and orders him to keep his mouth shut so that he can carry out his infamous plan to seek and avenge his lover. For some reason, she agrees. Hester's husband tells the townspeople that he is a doctor named Roger Chillingworth. He's a smart guy, so he realizes pretty quickly that Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale is the likely father of Hester's baby. Obviously, his next step is to stalk the minister day and night. The minister is too afraid to publicly confess his sin, but he feels quite guilty, not to mention the constant examination of Chillingworth, and perhaps also a bit of pain because of the strange red mark on his chest. Oh, and this continues for seven years. Finally, Hester realizes that her husband has been making a real psychological manipulation with the man he loves and reveals the true identity of Chillingworth to Dimmesdale. They make up a plan to settle in England and create a new life together. Dimmesdale finally recoils and confesses his sin to the townspeople on the scaffolding. He comes out with a pop tearing his shirt to reveal the mark on his chest, just before he dies. About a year later, Chillingworth dies and leaves all his money and property to Pearl, which means that she and her mother can finally leave that terrible community and return to England to build a new life. Years later, Hester returns to the colony, resuming the scarlet letter of her own free will. When she dies, she is buried near the minister, and they share a grave marked with the letter "A".
