Historical Landmarks and Architecture of Coro, Falcón

The Cross of San Clemente (Cruz de San Clemente)

Located in San Clemente Plaza, Calle Zamora, the Cruz de San Clemente is historically significant. It is stated that this cross was used in the first Mass celebrated after the founding of Coro and was placed in the structure during the presidency of Juan Crisóstomo Falcón.

The cross was crafted from Cují wood, a characteristic tree of the region whose inherent hardness and resistance have allowed its existence to endure until today. The Cross of San Clemente is also a powerful symbol of the nation's Christian heritage.

It is believed that the cross was carved from a mesquite tree, possibly near the location where Chief Ampíes met Manaure.

Church of San Clemente, Calle Zamora

The Church of San Clemente is one of the most interesting Corian churches. Its origin dates back to 1538. Historical records state that the site where the current church stands was once occupied by an earlier church made of straw, also dedicated to the saint, and built by Juan de Ampíes.

The present-day structure is the result of successive reconstructions undertaken throughout the eighteenth century. This work resulted in a masterpiece of folk art, showcasing a unique relationship between Hispanic, Nordic, and Antillean architectural elements, contributing significantly to the distinctive hallmark of Corian architecture.

Architectural Significance

  • The construction of the Church of San Clemente was designed in the form of a cross, with each of its arms pointing toward the cardinal points.
  • In Venezuela, there are only three churches with a cross-shaped plan: the Church of San Clemente, San Antonio (in Clarines), and San Miguel (in Boconó).
  • Above the main door are two small windows featuring colonial sculptures. In the last century, these windows served as the placement for the church bells.
