Interview with Huan Huan (the Panda)

They are timid. It likes swimming and is a good climber. It speaks Chinese. One is its favorite number because it is a solitary animal and likes to be alone. Its favorite person is Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, because he protects pandas. Its favorite game to play is hide and seek. Its best neighbors are the dwarf blue sheep, the golden snub-nosed monkey, and the takin goat. Its favorite time of year is March to May. It supports an organization called WWE that works with the Chinese government to save pandas. China doesn’t give pandas, it lends them to a zoo for 10 years. The country that receives pandas must pay China one million dollars per year. Bamboo is its favorite food. They live in six mountain ranges.

The Giant Sequoia

They are the largest living species in the world. They can live up to 3,000 years. They are the tallest trees in the world, but the biggest in volume, reaching 50-85 meters tall and 5-7 meters in diameter. They are evergreen conifers that need a lot of water to grow. The branches only grow at the top of the tree and each can measure 2.5 meters in diameter. The bark of a sequoia is very thick; it can be one meter thick, but the wood is very brittle. They are a protected species. The world’s largest tree is a giant sequoia called General Sherman in Sequoia National Park. It is 83.8 meters tall and has a diameter of 11 meters. They grow in the Sierra Nevada mountains (California), at an altitude of 1,500 to 2,400 meters.

Environment

4 Recycling Stories

Plastic Bottles

They can be recycled to produce clothes and stuffing for soft toys and duvets. The bottle caps can also have a second life. 25 bottles can make 1 fleece jacket, and 180kg of bottle caps can make 1 bench.

Cans and Tins

Soda cans and food tins take around 500 years to disintegrate. The food tins are compressed and melted down into steel bars to make new steel. 670 soda cans can make 1 bicycle, and 575 tins can make 1 shopping trolley.

Clothes

Natural textiles like cotton and wool are sorted by type and color, shredded, washed, and made into new textiles. The clothes in bad condition are turned into industrial rags.

Mobile Phones

They can function for around 7 years. In the UK, the average is around 18 months, which is why it is important to recycle or reuse them. 1 million mobiles can yield 250kg of silver, 9kg of palladium, 24kg of gold, and 9,000kg of copper.

The Power of Dog Poop

Dog poop can be used for energy. There is a machine that recycles dog poop and produces eco-energy from methane gas!

The problem is that in the USA, there are 83 million pet dogs that produce 10.6 million tons of stinky poop every year. Another problem is that it is toxic, as it contains 23 million bacteria. It contaminates our water supplies and is in the air we breathe.

One dog produces 1,124kg of dog poop in a year.

There are 8 million dogs in Britain, and they create 1,000 tons of dog poop every day.

Every ton of dog poop buried in landfill sites produces 450kg of greenhouse gases.

Solutions

Scientists have invented machines that can convert dog poop into energy. The artist Matthew Mazzotta installed anaerobic digesters in a park. These machines produce methane.
