Quranic Verses on Revelation and Divine Authority
Section 1: The Book and the Unbelievers
Tā Sīn Mīm.
- These are verses of the Book that makes things clear.
- It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.
- If such were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.
- But there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from Allah Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.
- They have indeed rejected the Message: so they will know soon enough the truth of what they mocked at!
- Do they not look at the earth—how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?
- Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.
- And verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.
- Behold, thy Lord called Moses: "Go to the people of iniquity—"
Section 2: The Mother of the Book and the Mockers
Hā Mīm.
- By the Book that makes things clear—
- We have made it a Quran in Arabic, that you may be able to understand and learn wisdom.
- And verily, it is in the Mother of the Book, in Our Presence, high in dignity, full of wisdom.
- Shall We then take away the Message from you and repel you, for that you are a people transgressing beyond bounds?
- But how many were the prophets We sent amongst the peoples of old?
- And never came there a prophet to them but they mocked him.
- So We destroyed them—stronger in power than these—and thus has passed on the Parable of the peoples of old.
- If thou wert to question them, "Who created the heavens and the earth?" They would be sure to reply, they were created by Him, the Exalted in Power, Full of Knowledge.
- Yea, the same that has made for you the earth like a carpet spread out, and has made for you roads and channels therein, in order that you may find guidance on the way.
Section 3: The Blessed Night and the Day of Smoke
Hā Mīm.
- By the Book that makes things clear.
- We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We ever wish to warn against Evil.
- In the Night is made distinct every affair of wisdom,
- By command, from Our Presence. For We ever send revelations,
- As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows all things;
- The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if you but have an assured faith.
- There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death—The Lord and Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors.
- Yet they play about in doubt.
- Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible.
