PSOE Members Overwhelmingly Approve Coalition with Unidas Podemos

The militants of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) have approved this Saturday by an overwhelming majority the agreement signed between Pedro Sanchez and Pablo Iglesias for a coalition government of the Socialist party with Unidas Podemos.

The agreement of the Socialists with the formation of Iglesias last November 12 has obtained the support of 92% of the militants who have voted, as reported by socialist sources to 98% of the scrutiny.

PSOE Consultation Results

The consultation of the bases, which is binding, according to the federal statutes of the PSOE, has had a participation of 63%, almost 12 points higher than the 2016 consultation when the PSOE asked the militancy for the agreement with Ciudadanos.

Pedro Sanchez has congratulated himself through a message on the Twitter social network of the "resounding support of the Socialist militancy for the PSOE agreement with the UP."

Vote Breakdown

  • Total votes cast: 103,718

This data does not include the result of the query in the PSC. The global census has been 178,651 people, including militants and affiliates of the PSOE, PSC, and their respective youth organizations.

Other Parties Consult Their Members

Nosotras Podemos, IU, and ERC also consult their militants. The call, which began on Friday electronically and has continued this Saturday in person in the municipal or district groups, has been formulated under the following question: "Do you support the agreement reached between the PSOE and Unidas Podemos to form a progressive coalition government?"

Not only do the Socialists submit the agreement to consultation. This week and until Wednesday 27, Unidas Podemos will also ask the militancy. The consultation in the case of IU ends this Sunday, at 24:00 hours. ERC will do the same on Monday 25.

Predictably, the same day that PSOE and the Republican formation begin negotiations for an investiture in which the abstention of the 13 deputies of ERC is key, and the condition passes through a dialogue table on Catalonia between governments, not between parties.
