Event Props: 3D, 2D, Built & Sculpted
3D Props: Constructed or Sculpted
3D props are either constructed or sculpted.
Tall columns can be constructed from seamless paper tubing. Doors, frames, pediments, pedestals, planters, and other items are available, depending on budget and local prop rental warehouses.
Advantages: Self-standing, usually easy to install.
Disadvantages: Expensive and bulky to handle, transport, and ship.
2D Props: Flats and Cutouts
2D props are rectangular two-dimensional props that are scenically or decoratively painted or covered with decorative fabric. A standard 2D prop is the cutout profile piece, which can consist of representational artwork that is “cut out” along its outline.
Numerous decorative 2D hard props are available, including folding screens and fabric-covered panels that can be rented, bought, or built.
Advantages: Store face to face and back to back, minimizing storage and transportation space. Easier to store and transport. Can be installed in levels, one in front of the other.
Disadvantages: Vulnerable to damage. While capable of adding depth and dimension, they do not approach the reality of a 3D prop, and they take up more space.
Built Props: Safety and Durability
Built props are more straightforward in their requirements. The primary caveat is that if the guests will touch, handle, use, or feel them, they must be safe and secure. They also must withstand the wear and tear imposed by uninhibited guests.
Sculpting Props: A Specialized Talent
Sculpting props, like scene painting, is a specialized talent, and many techniques can be employed.
Imagery in Props
Photography is generally regarded as the most credible type of imagery and is used for advertising, editorial design, annual reports, and corporate literature.
- Stock agencies grant limited rights for the use of their photographs.
- Cropping: Focus on part of the image.
- Outlining/silhouetting: Isolating the subject from the background.
- Digitally altered photographs: Photo editing programs allow for cropping, color manipulation, and creative manipulation.
Illustration in Props
Illustration offers an expressive quality, enhances mood/feeling, and helps the audience visualize something that cannot be seen or better understand a complex concept.
Storyboarding is used for video presentations, movies, TV, and animation.
