Chapter 1: The Bennets
Mr. and Mrs. Bennet have five daughters. Mrs. Bennet is eager to marry them off and is very unsubtle about it. When a rich young man named Bingley moves into the neighborhood, she hopes he will marry one of her girls.
Chapter 2: New Neighbors
Mr. Bennet formally visits Mr. Bingley. Shortly afterward, his daughters meet Bingley and his friend Mr. Darcy at a ball. Darcy is rude to Elizabeth.
Chapter 3: Jane's Admirer
Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley seem to be falling in love. Mr. Darcy is becoming interested in Elizabeth. Jane is invited to dine with the Bingleys and falls ill. Elizabeth joins her. Bingley's family expresses the opinion that a gentleman could never marry Jane due to her family's lower social standing.
Chapter 4: Mr. Collins's Visit
Mr. Collins, Mr. Bennet's cousin and heir, visits with the intention of marrying one of the daughters. He is dull and rude, and chooses Elizabeth.
Chapter 5: Meeting Mr. Wickham
The daughters meet Mr. Wickham, an army officer. Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham are on bad terms. Wickham tells Elizabeth that Darcy treated him dishonorably.
Chapter 6: The Netherfield Ball
At the ball, Mr. Collins insists on dancing with Elizabeth. Wickham is absent. Miss Bingley warns Elizabeth that Wickham is lying about Darcy, but Elizabeth trusts Wickham.
Chapter 7: A Proposal
Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth. She refuses. Her mother is angry, but Mr. Bennet supports Elizabeth's decision.
Chapter 8: Netherfield Emptied
Jane receives a letter from Bingley's sister stating they are leaving for London and will not return for a long time. The letter suggests Bingley is likely to marry Darcy's sister, not Jane. Elizabeth assumes this is due to the Bennets' social rank.
Chapter 9: Another Proposal
Mr. Collins proposes to Charlotte Lucas, who accepts.
Chapter 10: Jane in London
Jane, worried about Bingley, goes to London, but the Bingleys seem to be ignoring her.
Chapter 11: Elizabeth Visits Hunsford
Elizabeth visits Charlotte at her home.
Chapter 12: Lady Catherine de Bourgh
Elizabeth dines with Darcy's aunt, the grand and arrogant Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
