The people of the Inquisition wanted the prisoners to suffer; they had a choice: death by the worst physical agonies or death with terrible mental horrors. In this story, the victim had his nerves "torn to pieces because of his suffering"; he even thought, "I prefer to die rather than face the terror of the pit."

PREGUNTA C1

Surviving the Plague

Imagine that you survived the plague in Prince Prospero's castle. Describe the arrival of the stranger at the Masque, what you saw of him, and how you felt as events developed.

He came in, and I was scared. I could not calm myself down with anything. His mask was horrible, and something made me think that if I took it off, it could be scarier. The sensations are difficult to explain, and I assure you that they are horrible. Everybody distrusted him, and suddenly the clock struck, and we knew the end was near. I was the only one that survived.
