The Phantom of the Opera: A Tale of Mystery and Obsession
The employees of the Paris Opéra Populaire claim the building is haunted by a mysterious entity, the Opera Ghost (le fantôme de l'Opéra), who is blamed for numerous accidents. This spectral figure blackmails the opera's two managers, demanding 20,000 francs monthly and a private booth for all performances.
Christine Daaé's Ascent and a Fateful Love
Meanwhile, the young, aspiring diva Christine Daaé experiences a sudden rise to stardom. Believing herself to be inspired and guided by an Angel of Music, supposedly sent by her late father, she replaces the prima donna Carlotta, who has been sidelined multiple times by a mysterious illness. Christine quickly captivates the public's hearts, including that of her childhood sweetheart, Vicomte Raoul de Chagny.
The Phantom's Lair and a Terrifying Revelation
Jealous of Christine's burgeoning relationship with Raoul, the Phantom invites her to visit his hidden world beneath the opera house. She accepts, descending into the labyrinthine catacombs. There, she makes a horrifying discovery: her "angel" is, in fact, a deformed musical genius, wearing a mask to conceal his "aberrant" face. Christine screams in terror upon seeing his true visage, and the Phantom confines her to his dwelling. He agrees to release her only when she promises to return to him of her own free will.
A Heart Divided: Love, Fear, and Escape
Christine finds herself torn between her love for the charming young Vicomte Raoul and her unsettling fascination with the Phantom's mysteriously beautiful music. When she realizes that her beloved "angel" is the very Phantom of the Opera responsible for the accidents and murders plaguing the opera house, she and Raoul decide to marry secretly and flee Paris, hoping to escape the Phantom's grasp.
The Final Confrontation
