Agricultural Activity in the Pampas Region

The Farm Act enabled the expansion of agricultural development. Currently, agricultural production aims for self-sufficiency in the domestic food market and forms the basis of the main export complexes. The balance depends on balancing commercial products and cultivated area per year. Modernization in recent years has incorporated new technologies, varied seed varieties, and fertilizers, increasing productivity and improving competitiveness in exports. Organic products are expensive, targeting a market sector with high economic levels. Changes in land use, from agriculture to livestock farming, increase the cultivated area for livestock. This development is favored by:

  • Flat terrain suitable for machinery.
  • Temperate climate, fertile land, and sufficient rainfall.
  • Black, semi-extensive soils ideal for agriculture.
  • Proximity to river ports (Paraná, Río de la Plata, Atlantic Ocean), facilitating product distribution worldwide.

Main crops include cereals, wheat, corn, and forage grains. Another important sector is oilseeds. The complex production process, from raw materials to the delivery of the finished product to the market, involves several stages:

  1. Planting and Seeds: Seed selection is crucial, with increasing use of hybrid seeds and direct sowing.
  2. Harvest and Production: Allows for crop rotation of more than one crop per year and can be combined with livestock farming.
  3. Collection: Requires infrastructure to harvest and maintain the products from the moment of commercialization and prevent soil deterioration caused by moisture, pests, and rodents.
  4. Industrialization: Necessary to increase the country's output, utilizing more labor and adding higher value.
  5. Commercialization: Includes seeds, oils, and flour, which are the main export items.

Industrial Activity in the Pampas Region

Industrial activity involves the organization of operations, handling, and processing of natural resources and intermediate goods. Multinational companies are installed in the region to produce for Argentina and MERCOSUR. Currently, some sectors are experiencing a critical stage due to imports of manufactured products from MERCOSUR, affecting firms, increasing unemployment, and impacting the tax base. The industrial axis extends along the Paraná and Río de la Plata rivers, constituting a significant industrial area in the region and the country. This area is characterized by its riverfront, technological development, and industrial diversity. Its location and concentration are a consequence of:

  • Proximity to ports.
  • Communication with the rest of the country.
  • Abundance of labor.
  • Existence of large consumer markets.
  • Water availability.
  • Energy availability.

Livestock Activity in the Pampas Region

The Pampas region has the highest number of cattle, pigs, and horses and produces the most meat and milk. This is favored by the mild climate and tender pastures, allowing for natural or induced grasslands through forage crops. Areas of specialization are distinguished:

  • Breeding Area: In fields with low-quality grazing.
  • Wintering Area: On the best land, high land with sufficient rainfall.
  • Mixed Areas: In some establishments.
  • Dairy Zones: Near major urban centers.

The beef production complex involves different stages carried out in various agricultural establishments. Cattle are taken to slaughterhouses and cold storage facilities, where industrialization achieves the final product. The commercialization stage involves beef and by-products on one side and the main destinations worldwide on the other.
