The Will to Power and Eternal Recurrence

The fundamental value exalted by the Will to Power is the exaltation of life. The concept of Eternal Return suggests that all configurations of matter and energy will combine and recur infinitely, meaning every moment will be lived again, exactly as it is now, an infinite number of times. Man is merely a step toward the Übermensch (Superman).

The Three Metamorphoses of the Spirit

The metamorphosis of the spirit involves three crucial stages:

  1. The Camel: Symbolizes those who obey and carry heavy loads, such as traditional moral precepts.
  2. The Lion: Represents the great conqueror who fights for freedom against the restrictive “Thou Shalt.”
  3. The Child: A state of innocence, free from prejudice, ready to affirm new values and embrace a new culture.

Defining the Übermensch (Superman)

The Übermensch is the goal, the man we are striving toward. This figure generates a revolt against conventional humanity, serving the recovery of vital instincts that have been suppressed.

Master Morality vs. Slave Morality

  • Master Morality (Gentlemen): Characterized by moral superiors who give free rein to their instincts of life and affirm strength.
  • Slave Morality: Seeks to maintain its own weakness. It is grounded in moral fear, ressentiment (resentment) against the powerful, and the negation of life-affirming values.

Eight Characteristics of the Superior Man

  1. Ignores the prejudices of the masses, driven by his own Will to Power.
  2. Does not believe in equality, but rather in the hierarchy of men, rejecting the moral equality of the flock.
  3. Maintains a healthy distrust of everything that originates from the herd (the common people and scholars).
  4. His freedom and conscience are paramount. His freedom is so pronounced that he flees from indoctrination.
  5. He loves being human because he sees in himself the element that can be overcome.
  6. Life is an open experiment. The Übermensch is not a biological evolution, but a man with a new, higher morality. He constantly experiments, seeking something superior, especially on moral grounds.
  7. The superior man laughs at the values of the supersensible world. The only thing that possesses the character of force is the exaltation of life.
  8. Like a child, he has no fear of prejudice; he embraces experience and play. He is like a man walking on a tightrope, exposed to risks, but he does not fear the path toward the Superman.
