Engaging the Student

The tutor introduces the topic of eating out and initiates a conversation with the student using these questions:

  • Do you enjoy eating out? How often do you do it?
  • Do you have any favorite restaurants or cuisines? Why do you like them?
  • Have you ever encountered a problem at a restaurant? Did you complain?
Content Preparation

Activating Background Knowledge

The tutor shows a picture of a man complaining in a restaurant: Screenshot_2023-01-23_at_00.00.39.png

The student discusses the following:

  • Why do you think this man is complaining?
  • What are some common reasons people complain in restaurants?
Language Preparation

Building Functional Language

The tutor and student brainstorm expressions. The tutor then provides a categorizing task: organize phrases into polite and impolite (e.g., "I want to speak to the manager!" vs. "Could you please bring me a clean plate?"). The tutor elicits features of meaning, form, and pronunciation.

*Note: This stage is optional but helpful for lower-level or shy students to reduce cognitive load.

Speaking Task

Roleplay Activity

The student and tutor roleplay a restaurant situation. The student acts as the guest, and the tutor acts as the waiter. They record the conversation for later review.

Content Feedback

Reviewing the Conversation

The tutor and student provide feedback on the content of the roleplay:

  • How successful was the conversation?
  • Would the guest have received a resolution?
  • How polite was the waiter?
Language Feedback

Error Correction and Upgrading

Listening to the recording, the student identifies successful language use and areas of uncertainty. The tutor presents six sentences on the whiteboard for the student to evaluate and correct.

Task Extension

Repeating the Task

The pair repeats the speaking task, slightly altering the situation (e.g., changing the restaurant type or the specific problem) to reinforce learning.
