Mastering English Grammar Essentials

English Verb Tenses: Structures and Usage

Present Simple

  • Structure: Verb + s/es (for third person singular)
  • Common Time Expressions: always, usually, generally, often, sometimes, every week, never, every day, at night

Present Continuous

  • Structure: am/is/are + verb + ing
  • Common Time Expressions: now, right now, at the moment, this year, at present, today, next, tomorrow (for future arrangements)

Past Simple

  • Structure: Verb + ed / irregular verb (did for negative/questions)
  • Common Time Expressions: yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 2004, when, then, 15th century

Past Continuous

  • Structure: was/were + verb + ing
  • Common Time Expressions: last night, last week, last year, at 3:00, when, while, as

Future Simple

  • Structure: will + base form of verb

Future Perfect Simple

  • Structure: will + have + past participle (ed)
  • Common Time Expressions: by this time, by next week, by 2 o'clock, by the end, by July

Future Continuous

  • Structure: will + be + verb + ing
  • Common Time Expressions: at this time tomorrow, next (week/month), on Monday, in the next decade

Present Perfect Simple

  • Structure: have/has + past participle (ed)
  • Common Time Expressions: never, ever, already, just, yet, recently, lately, for (years), since, how long

Past Perfect Simple

  • Structure: had + past participle (ed)
  • Common Time Expressions: already, by the time, after, before, until, never, just, when, as soon as

Present Perfect Continuous

  • Structure: have/has + been + verb + ing
  • Common Time Expressions: for a month, for a year, since 2004, all night, all morning, all day, all week, how long

Past Perfect Continuous

  • Structure: had + been + verb + ing
  • Common Time Expressions: for hours, since last March, when, until, before, last week, last day

Relative Pronouns: Connecting Ideas

  • Who/That: Used for people
  • Which/That: Used for objects, animals
  • When: Used for time
  • Where: Used for place
  • Whose: Used for possession

Conditional Sentences: Expressing Possibilities

Zero Conditional

  • Structure: If + Present Simple, Present Simple
  • Usage: Facts which are generally true or scientific facts. The condition always has the same result.

First Conditional

  • Structure: If/Unless + Present Simple, will + base form of verb
  • Usage: A possible situation in the future. Predicting a likely result in the future.

Second Conditional

  • Structure: If/Unless + Past Simple, would + base form of verb
  • Usage: Hypothetical or unlikely situations. Unreal or improbable situation now or in the future.

Third Conditional

  • Structure: If + Past Perfect Simple, would have + past participle
  • Usage: The person is imagining a different past. Imaginary situation that did not happen in the past.
