Communication Process
Communication is the process of transmitting information from one person to another, which is then shared by both. For communication to occur, it is necessary that the information recipient receives and understands it. If the information is simply transmitted but not received, then it was merely disclosed.
Types of Communication
- Verbal Communication: This may be oral or written, meaning when you use words when speaking or when writing.
- Nonverbal Communication: This may involve gestures, looks, posture, whether conscious or not. The goal is not to explain verbally what is meant or what one is thinking, but rather to use other means of communication such as signs, figures, objects, colors, or visual symbols.
Diagrammatic Representation: Transmitter (left), message (middle), receiver (right), code (center), communication channel (final).
Elements of Communication

- Encoding: The transformation of an idea into a message through a code (e.g., verbal language, writing).
- Issue (Sending): The act of sending a message to the recipient (e.g., sending a letter).
- Channel (Noise): Whatever exists between the sender and recipient that can affect the transmission.
- Front (Sense Organs): Used to process visual, auditory, and kinesthetic information. Each person has a perceptual filter through which they receive the message.
