Traditional Literature: Oral Heritage and Evolution
Traditional literature represents one of the enduring activities of human societies, accompanying us throughout history. It has significantly helped us to live and shape our modern identity. Historically, the most important literary tradition has been the oral tradition. Songs or ballads, sung during games or while performing certain tasks, were transmitted and renewed generation after generation.
Flamenco: Universal Andalusian Art Form
Flamenco is the most universal demonstration of Andalusian culture. The first documents we have of this art form date back to the 18th century. Its historical roots are ancient, connecting us with other peoples such as Indians, Arabs, Phoenicians, and Greeks. Additionally, it received significant early influences from the Gypsy people.
Key Flamenco Forms (Palos)
- Tonás: This form includes martinetes and tonás deblas, typically featuring four eight-syllable verses.
- Seguiriyas: Derived from the toná, it comprises four lines, typically eight-syllable (hexasyllabic), but the third line is hendecasyllabic (eleven syllables).
- Soleares: These are compositions of three or four verses. When women dance it, it is often called soleá por bulerías, and when men dance it, it has other specific names like soleá apolá.

Romanticism is a cultural and artistic movement that emerged in Germany and England in the early nineteenth century.

- José de Espronceda: A great poet of early Romanticism. From a young age, his literary work was committed to defending freedom, leading to his exile in London, Bordeaux, and Paris. His poetry exhibits several trends: lyric poetry, patriotic poems, and works featuring marginalized or fictional characters.
- Duke of Rivas (Ángel de Saavedra): He wrote historical romances and chronicles based on medieval legends. Some of his notable works include Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino.
- José Zorrilla: He was one of the most renowned poets of his time. Along with Tirso de Molina, he is considered among the most popular.
- Mariano José de Larra: From a very young age, he dedicated himself to journalism. He married, but later fell in love with another married woman. His major works are his insightful articles.
