  • The 4th Amendment protects a person’s reasonable expectation of privacy.

  • The expectation of privacy refers to those places where the U.S. Constitution requires law enforcement to obtain a warrant in order to search for evidence of a crime, such as a person's home or car.

  • Searches and seizures that can legally take place without a warrant are limited.

CHAPTER 5

  • Patrol: the backbone of all police agencies

    • Responsible for preventing crime, apprehending suspects, and assisting community members

    • Usually the police officer who makes the first contact with the public is the patrol officer.

    • Reactive policing is generally a response for a call for service rather than a self-initiated action

    • Proactive policing efforts involve crime prevention activities (Community policing)

    • Three key components of community policing:

    • Partnerships: involve collaboration efforts to solve problems and increase trust in police

    • Organizational transformation: requires a structure of management, personnel, and information systems that supports the community partners and proactive initiatives

    • Problem-solving: promotes systematic examinations of crime-related issues to provide for effective responses

  • Problem-oriented policing (POP)

    • Requires the identification and analysis of crime and disorder problems in order to construct an effective response

    • POP often makes use of the SARA model

  • SARA model:

    • Scan: identify and prioritize problems

    • Analyze: research the problem

    • Respond: develop long-lasting solutions

    • Assess: evaluate the success of the responses
