European Language Portfolio (ELP)

The European Language Portfolio (ELP) is a document designed for foreign language learners to record their learning journey and cultural experiences.

ELP Structure and Components

The ELP consists of three main parts:

  • Language Passport: This section details an individual's foreign language proficiency level. It includes a table outlining skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), along with space for comments and certificates.
  • Language Biography: A comprehensive record of an individual's language learning experiences, including certificates, diplomas, and courses.
  • Dossier: Contains examples of personal work to illustrate achievements and experiences documented in the Language Biography and Passport.

Key Objectives of the ELP

  • 1. Encourage lifelong foreign language learning for all citizens.
  • 2. Enhance language learning processes and foster self-assessment abilities.
  • 3. Facilitate citizen exchange and mobility within Europe.
  • 4. Provide a global tool for recognizing and measuring second language (L2) proficiency.
  • 5. Promote communication among citizens of diverse nationalities (especially in Europe) and foster understanding of different cultures, customs, and traditions.

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

The CEFR is structured into nine chapters and four annexes:

CEFR Chapters

  • C1: Aims and Objectives: Aligned with Council of Europe guidelines, emphasizing plurilingualism.
  • C2: Approach: Focuses on communicative competences and language use.
  • C3: Common Reference Levels
  • C4: Language Use and User
  • C5: User Competences
  • C6: Teaching-Learning Process
  • C7: Tasks and Roles in Teaching-Learning
  • C8: Linguistic Diversification and Curriculum
  • C9: Assessment

CEFR Annexes

  • A1: Proficiency Descriptors Development
  • A2: Illustrative Descriptors (aligned with CEFR levels)
  • A3: DIALANG Scales and Project
  • A4: ALTE “Can Do” Statements (Association of Language Testers in Europe)

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

The Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodology integrates the learning of subject content with a foreign language. CLIL aims to facilitate natural language acquisition, motivate students, and create an environment where learners can enjoy new content while simultaneously practicing and enhancing their foreign language proficiency.
